Mystical and Modern Macbeth
Its hard to relate to Macbeth for a number of reasons, as well as him being a murderer(which most people aren't), he also lives in a world where he is high up in the hierarchy. In comparison to the modern life of today, you don't see an abundance of young Macbeths pursuing their quest for the title of King, although that could be relatable to modern day fame and fortune. In order to make Macbeth relatable, there needs to be something that you understand and something that could potentially happen to you or those around you(its not like your friends are likely to become thane of glamis too soon).
Themes of murder, ambition, pride, anger and greed manifest themselves in the modern Macbeth as well as the mystical Macbeth.
Sef Gonzales, much like Macbeth himself, was a true murderer at heart.
Sef Gonzales was much like any other ordinary teenager, he had a family(which he killed), friends(which he lied to), school(which he was failing) and a considerable amount of wealth in his family(which was his motivation for killing his family).
One evening in a suburb of Sydney lurked the dangerous Sef Gonzales. He'd set his plan up to appear that he wasn't home at the time of the murders, so he sat in his car for a while. Time passed and he went inside to commit the first murder, that of his sister. He didn't even think twice when he swung the baseball bat to the side of her head and then brutally stabbed her. There goes the first murder. Now he was on his killing spree.
Unlike any other child home in the afternoon, Sef wasn't doing homework or playing video games, he was plotting his parents imminent deaths. Knife in hand, and his determination to kill the only people in his life that genuinely cared about him(obviously not very mutual), he waited. Mum arrives home, and instead of getting greeted with a hug at the door, she walks into the house and is brutally stabbed in the chest. Sef and Macbeth share the same motivation to kill, a thirst for power and ambition. They have gone past the point of contemplating their murders, they are simply devices to their own manic actions.
The last murder to commit(his Father) is similar to the killing of King Duncan. One person is in the way of what the murderer wants to achieve, in the case of Macbeth that is the title of king, in the case of Sef that is the family's wealth. All that Sef has to do now is sit and wait for his father to arrive home. Briefcase in hand walks Sef's father, and then comes Sef with his knife at the ready. No words are said before Sef lunges at his father and stabs him, shock or perhaps pain causes the dad to cry out. Much like King Duncan, did the father feel betrayed? Did the father feel betrayed when he thought about the love he felt for his son, whilst Sef was secretly plotting the murders of his family out of hate. And as the briefcase falls to the ground, much like the crown of King Duncan, there goes the power held by the father.
Whats done is done.
Also, much like the story of Macbeth, Sef tries to set up evidence that someone else committed the crime. He smears a bit of blood around the place, kicks a few things over and then proceeds to spray painting the words "**** off Asians. He is trying to frame discriminative groups such as the Ku Klux Klan.
No one expects the son of this family to have any part in the murders. He keeps a straight face, but slowly the details of the murders don't start to fit together, and Sef becomes a suspect, worry starts to embed itself in his conduct. Much like Macbeth he breaks, not just out of insanity, but also guilt. During the time before his accusation, Sef inherited his parents fortune and purchased an expensive car, he was enjoying the luxuries of his crime. But soon discovered that you cant mask the guilt and anxiety you feel by covering it up with false pleasures.
On the 20th of May 2004, Sef Gonzales was convicted of the murder of his family.
